Today’s expansion adds tens of millions of Muslims to the more than 100 million Muslims already banned from the United States. Monday marked the third anniversary of Trump’s first Muslim Ban executive order 13769, which was issued on January 27, 2017.

Earlier today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) held a press briefing at which senior officials announced the president signed a presidential proclamation expanding the Muslim Ban to Burma, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania.

On Burma, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria, the restrictions will apply to immigrant visas -- for those seeking to live or work in the U.S. permanently. For Sudan and Tanzania, the restrictions are being placed on diversity visas. Iran, Syria, Libya, Venezuela, North Korea, Yemen, and Somalia were already subject to the travel ban, and remain so.

In prepared remarks for the news conference, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad wrote:

“At its core it started as a Muslim ban and it remains a Muslim Ban. By adding on ore two non-Muslim countries is just a window dressing.

“The ban will continue to separate families of color, prevent students from coming to seek education, prevent families form attending weddings and funerals, prevent patients from seeking medical care, and prevent businesspeople from conducting business in the United States.

“All these people will be prevented from coming to the United States based on the way they pray and look. That’s the ultimate goal of this administration -- a racist, Islamophobic and white supremacist agenda.

“Trump has a lot of animus toward Muslims and Africans. People who are affected by this ban should contact CAIR for help. We will continue to fight this ban in the courts.”

Earlier this week, CAIR and other organizations took part in a court hearing and rally in Richmond Va., challenging the Trump administration's Muslim Ban based on its discriminatory intent.
